AIC Lab
AIC Lab is a working environment at the Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering on the Linnanmaa campus. It brings research, demonstrations and equipment into one space where they can be seen and used. It is one of the environments through which AIC brings research, services and collaboration together in practice.
Ground floor, ITEE building, University of Oulu
Zone
AI Garage
Start with a question. AI Garage helps you find the right expertise, environment and next step.
- Question
A question is enough. No prepared brief and no defined project are needed to start.
- Experts
The question takes shape. The need is worked through with experts and framed so that it can be acted on.
- Environments
The right place is found. The question is pointed to the expertise, research group, environment or funding route it needs.
- Experiments
A small trial comes first. Whether an approach works can be tested before anything larger is built.
- Solutions
Solved together. The researchers, environments and companies the question needs are brought together.
The digital contact channel is available: see Contact.
The AI Garage service model and service offering are being developed in stages.
Zone
IoT Wall and Prototyping
A zone for sensors, measurement and rapid prototyping. Here the conditions and energy use of the space are tracked, and physical prototypes are made to support research and development.
IoT Wall
The IoT Wall collects real-time data on the space’s conditions, use and energy consumption.
- Conditions and use. Sensors monitor temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, noise, movement and light, and show how the space is used.
- Energy consumption. The consumption of connected devices is monitored in real time. The data is used to create energy profiles and cost estimates based on spot electricity prices.
- Use of data. Measurement data is used to improve air quality, lighting, energy efficiency and working conditions.
Prototyping
Prototyping capabilities support research, development and the exploration of new solutions.
- Physical prototypes. For rapidly turning ideas into models and demonstrators.
- Versatile 3D printing. For working with different materials and printing methods.
Zone
Immersion Zone
A shared VR and AR platform for presenting research, built around visualisation and audio.
- Shared VR and AR platform. For presenting research results, technologies and demonstrations in an immersive setting.
- Binaural audio. Studies how sound shapes experience and human-computer interaction, including between a driver and an autonomous vehicle.
- Vehicle and environment simulation. Vehicles and environments are modelled and their behaviour studied in simulated situations.
- Multi-user VR environments. Studies how information is presented and shared when several people work in the same virtual environment.
Demonstrations
The demonstrations shown in the Immersion Zone change as research and development move on. What a visit covers is planned together when it is arranged.
Zone
Meeting Space & Lounge
A meeting and working space where material can be viewed, worked on and presented interactively, together.
- Interactive work. Two touchscreen UI tables, 65" and 49", for viewing and working on material together.
- Shared presentations. A 2 x 2 video wall for visualisations, presentations and group work.
- Group meetings. The space suits small meetings, workshops and visits.
- A comfortable setting. Six armchairs and a living green wall.
Zone
Digital Signage Displays
Displays at the AIC Lab entrance, in the lounge window and in AI Garage bring AIC and AI/O content into view for campus users and visitors.
- At the lab door. The displays facing Restaurant Voltti show images, video, updates and news.
- In the lounge window. The displays facing the university yard extend the reach across the campus.
- In AI Garage. Content is also shown on the display on the south wall of AI Garage.
- Remote management. Content is managed centrally on a cloud-based platform.

Health Kiosk
Explore how health data, sensors and digital solutions can support research and future healthcare.
- Health measurement. Selected wellbeing measurements can be taken independently on the spot.
- Combined health data. Shows how readings from several sensors can be combined into one picture instead of being read one at a time.
- Research use. The data supports research into measurement methods, monitoring and digital health.
- Future healthcare. Demonstrates health technology applications that are being developed to support care and prevention.
The Health Kiosk is in a separate space outside AIC Lab and is not shown on the floor plan. Its location is given when a visit is arranged.
