AI as part of real‑world systems
Connecting data, devices, networks and the physical world through operational intelligence, built in Oulu to empower people and society.
Assembles
A centralised structure for distributed capabilities.
Delivers
Starts projects and puts them into practice.
Creates impact
Makes results visible.
The concept
Advanced Intelligence emerges when artificial intelligence is combined with data, devices, networks and the physical environment.
Advanced Intelligence is not a claim to a higher scientific category. It is a strategic concept for AI that is built into a working, connected and validated system.
Models and algorithms
AI as part of a working architecture
Reasoning, prediction, generation
Situational understanding, decision and action
Digital performance
Connection to devices, networks and the physical environment, supporting the people who work with it
Centralised computation
Local, embedded and edge intelligence, close to where data is created
A single technical component
A complete connected system
An experiment or a demonstration
A tested, validated and deployable solution
Scope rule
If AI supports human activity or connects to devices, networks, processes or physical environments, it belongs in AI/O.
Why Oulu
Research, industry, talent and environments in one place.
Advanced Intelligence needs more than laboratories. Oulu already brings together research, companies, talent, environments, public actors and funding structures in one connected region.
Research
Research groups and methods across AI, wireless, sensing, software and human-AI interaction.
Companies and industry
Real challenges, real data and production environments.
Talent
Graduates, doctoral researchers and professionals who stay in the region.
Environments
Laboratories, test networks and living labs open to joint work.
Public actors
The city, healthcare organisations and public services as use environments.
Funders and networks
Funding pathways and international links from Europe and beyond.
The model
AI/O is the strategic concept. AIC assembles and delivers it.
Two names with two roles. This division of roles also structures the research areas, services and environments that follow.
Intelligence
Oulu
The brand
- The outward-facing identity for the overall concept
- A shared frame for the four research areas
- The visible form of Advanced Intelligence in Oulu
Intelligence
Center
Assembles and delivers AI/O in practice
- Assembles people, research, programmes and environments
- Connects test environments, training and company services
- Holds the shared operating model and puts it into practice
The two are shown side by side to explain their roles. They remain separate and independent marks. This is not a combined AI/O and AIC logo.
AIC Lab is one of the environments through which AIC brings research, services and collaboration together in practice. It is connected to the shared service model that links the wider network.
Research areas
Four areas, equal in weight.
The four areas are the primary framework for presenting AI/O research.
AI/O Local
Devices and sensors. Local data and computation. Edge computing. Security and data governance.
AI/O Human
Human and AI interaction. Authority and responsibility. Skills and adoption. Interfaces people can understand.
AI/O Physical
Sensors and devices. Robotics and machines. Digital twins. Modelling and control of the physical environment.
AI/O Connected
Interoperability between environments. Data sharing. Multi-actor collaboration. Shared learning.
Services
Four areas of support.
AIC assembles what already exists in Oulu into services a company or a public actor can use. The service offering is being developed in stages.
Advisory & Foresight
Foresight, technology advice, roadmaps and funding pathways.
Testing
Sandboxes and test environments, innovation environments, validation.
Matching
Connecting industry and public-sector needs with researchers, technologies, funding and partners.
Training
Company and applied training, internal university training, technology and research-led training.
How it works
A company can join
at any stage.
The four service areas support the company throughout its journey. They are not sequential, and the starting point depends on the need.

AIC Loop
Research and industry, one cycle.
The cycle starts with a company challenge, continues through frontier research and testing, and feeds the results and new questions back into research.
Company challenge
A real challenge from a company or project is framed as a research question.
Frontier research
Research groups bring the methods, the expertise and new knowledge.
Testing and validation
The solution is tried and validated in test and innovation environments.
Results and new research questions
return to research
The same cycle repeats in every project.
Company collaboration runs through all of it.
Environments
The first environments that can be connected to one shared model.
This is the set of environments and platforms included in AIC's initial phase. They already exist across the university, the city and the companies in Oulu. The shared service model connects them step by step, access is agreed case by case, and more environments will be added as AIC develops. If the environment you represent is missing from the list, write to aicenter@oulu.fi.
